Michael L. Vetter, PhD

Dr. Michael Vetter provides counsel to life sciences and biotech start-ups, private and public companies, venture capitals, and academic research institutions to protect and grow their technology and business assets. Mike’s practice focuses on the development of patent portfolios through strategic preparation and prosecution. Mike’s clients benefit from his experience providing counsel on all aspects of IP strategy to start-up to midsize biotech companies. Mike also leverages his technical background to support clients of Choate’s Government Enforcement Group to assess issues of scientific integrity for academic medical centers and private biotech companies.

Industry Experience

As a Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School, Michael examined host-viral pathogen interaction, with a focus on understanding the role of several different kinases in early post-entry and egress events of Dengue virus, and was the recipient of the Virus-Host Interactions and Cancer Training Grant. Michael completed his PhD studies at Vanderbilt University, where his research focused on investigating the effect of CD4+ T cell differentiation on the expression of the HIV restriction factor APOBEC3. While at Vanderbilt, Michael received the Cellular and Molecular Microbiology Training Grant, as well as the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections Young Investigator Award. Prior to obtaining his PhD, Michael was a Research Assistant at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine’s Division of Hypertension, where he investigated signaling of the second messenger cGMP.

Patent Prosecution and Counseling

  • Portfolio development and strategic IP counsel for nucleic acid diagnostics company from founding through first product including management of acquisitions and licensing.
  • Patent prosecution and portfolio strategy for CAR-T companion therapy start-up.
  • Patent application preparation and IP strategy advice with respect to licenses and freedom to operate analysis for stem cell discovery and cancer therapeutics start up.

Contentious Matters

  • Adimab, LLC v. LinkedUp Bioscience, Inc. and Tao Wang, No., Mass. Super. Ct: Counsel to Adimab in trade secret misappropriation and breach of contract dispute brought against LinkedUp related to highly engineered yeast strains, and technologies for cultivating and utilizing those strains to express and screen antibodies that bind to target antigens.

Scientific Integrity

  • Assisted in internal investigation on behalf of international pharmaceutical company concerning product development practices and FDA compliance
  • Counseled an academic medical center regarding potential False Claims Act implications of alleged scientific misconduct involving federally funded research.
  • Assisting university and teaching hospital clients address “foreign component” and potential financial conflict of interest concerns surfaced internally and facilitating self-disclosures to agencies where appropriate.

  • As a PhD student, Michael served as an AIDS Outreach Coordinator in Nashville, where he organized and trained volunteers to educate students about HIV and AIDS and participated as a volunteer educator at local schools and in national video conferences
